Alpha's Twins Chapter 186
"Natalia?"
Adrian's voice cut through my thoughts, pulling me back to reality. I squeezed my eyes shut and forced my wolf down, burying her deep inside. When I opened them again, I made sure they were empty—completely blank. No one would find even a hint of emotion there.
I turned to face Adrian. He stepped closer, his tall frame towering over me and blocking out the sunlight that had been warming my face.
"Why did you marry me?" His voice was quiet, almost hesitant. "You could have said no. You could have told everyone the truth—told your parents that I was drunk and forced you to—"
"You didn't force me." I cut him off sharply.
He blinked, clearly stunned. "I didn't?"
"No. What happened that night was a mistake. We both know that. And yeah, I should've said no to this whole marriage thing."
He went quiet, his eyes searching my face. I kept my expression stone-cold, staring right back at him without flinching.
"Why did you sleep with me?"
No way was I telling him the real reason. That was ancient history—stuff I didn't want to dig up anymore. Besides, he didn't deserve the truth.
I let out a tired sigh and looked down.
"Don't you think hooking up with a young guy beats being stuck with some old creep?"
"What?" His voice sharpened. "So you would've slept with any random young guy you ran into that night?"
"Yeah, pretty much."
I watched his hands ball into fists, like he was fighting to keep his temper in check.
I lifted my head and gave him a cold smile.
"Alpha, you're nothing special. Don't let it go to your head."
My words hit their mark. He grabbed my arms, his grip tight.
"I came here to have a civilized conversation. Why are you trying to piss me off?"
"Civilized conversation? Fine, let's be civilized then." I yanked my arms free and walked to the other side of the bridge.
Adrian followed, of course.
"So what's this big important talk about? At least now you know the truth. One less thing for people to blame me for."
He didn't answer, just stared out at the water flowing beneath us.
I glanced at him sideways.
This guy hadn't changed one bit. I remembered all those nights I'd waited for him to come home, dying to see him, and he'd disappear for days without a word.
*How cruel you were to me, Adrian,* I thought bitterly.
He turned toward me, and I immediately looked away.
"All this time, I had you completely wrong. I should've figured out the truth the next morning."
I let out a harsh laugh, still not looking at him. "Yeah, right. Would've saved three people a lot of trouble—me, my ex-husband, and his precious childhood sweetheart."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Adrian's knuckles go white as he gripped the bridge railing.
Wait—did I lie about something?
What was with that reaction?
I shrugged it off. I'd already wasted enough time on this heartless bastard. Time to get out of here.
I was about to tell him I was leaving when his words stopped me cold.
"I'm sorry, Natalia."
