Adrian's POV

"What did you just say?" I muttered, stepping toward her.

But before I could reach her, she slipped into the car.

"Drive," she told the cab driver.

I grabbed the window frame to stop her. The driver saw my hand and hesitated, not starting the engine.

I leaned down to look at her.

"I asked you a question."

She stared straight ahead, completely ignoring me. Her dismissal was eating me alive. I couldn't stand it when she shut me out like this.

"Who did you choose? Who is he? Max Harrison?"

Natalia whipped her head toward me the second Max's name left my mouth.

Her expression went ice-cold. The hatred in her eyes was unmistakable.

Streetlight filtered through the window beside her, casting shadows across her face.

I couldn't look away. She'd been so fragile when I married her all those years ago. I never thought those eyes that used to look at me with such warmth would turn this cold.

"My man is waiting for me at home," Natalia said, her voice like ice.

I could see how desperate she was to get back to him—to another man waiting for her.

Just the thought of her with someone else felt like a knife twisting in my chest.

"So those rumors and the photos..."

She frowned like she had no clue what I was talking about.

I shook my head. "Why am I even asking?"

"Look, go back to your girlfriend. She deserves your attention way more than some coffee shop worker. Why are you wasting your time on me? I'm not interested in talking to you."

I stared at her, my hand still gripping the window. Every word out of her mouth was making me angrier.

"Stay away from him," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Sir, why are you bothering this young lady—"

I shot a look at the driver, and he shut up instantly.

What did he think this was? That I was some creep harassing a woman?

"You know, driver, this pack isn't safe for women. Makes you wonder about the head Alpha," Natalia said to him.

"Our Alpha? He's powerful. Don't talk bad about him. Women have been safe in this pack ever since he took over."

Natalia cleared her throat. "I can see how safe it is."

I closed my eyes as her sarcasm hit its mark. When I opened them, she was staring right at me.

Her gaze felt like an accusation. My grip on the window tightened.

"How long are you going to keep running from me? You can only dodge Eric and Max for so long. What's your endgame?"

She suddenly leaned in close to my face, and my heart skipped a beat.

I couldn't hold it together anymore. When she stopped just inches from me, my eyebrows shot up.

She smiled at me, but it was bitter and cut right through me.

Then she said,

"My plan? I'll just smile, and you'll destroy yourself."
