Alpha's Twins Chapter 195

Natalia's POV

I kept my eyes on Max while he drove, but my mind was wandering.

"What's got you so distracted?" he asked.

I quickly looked away. "Nothing."

I closed my eyes and leaned back in my seat. I couldn't stop thinking about Adrian's apology.

Looking back on those two years with him, I felt like such an idiot.

I never did anything to upset him. I waited on him hand and foot like some kind of servant whenever he came home. He'd stay out late just to avoid having dinner with me.

How was saying sorry supposed to fix any of that?

I'd never forgive him.

I couldn't.

"Natalia."

I opened my eyes and looked at Max.

"Thank you, Max. I'm so lucky to have a friend like you. You're willing to help my brother—I can't tell you how much that means to me."

When he'd picked me up from the bridge an hour ago, he took me to a restaurant so we could talk.

I'd convinced him to help my brother, and he'd agreed. When I told him I had nothing to offer in return, he said he wouldn't ask for anything I couldn't give.

"As a healer, it's my duty. But I can't promise anything until I examine the Alpha."

"I know. But I believe you can help. Harold said the same thing."

He looked confused. "Harold?"

"Oh right, I didn't mention him. He's the head doctor of this pack. He's a close friend of mine too."

"Close friend... I see," Max muttered.

I stayed quiet for a moment. Was he thinking I was comparing him to another doctor? Or was he upset that I was talking about someone else when he was supposedly the best doctor in the world?

"How's life treating you?"

I focused back on him. "Fine. As you can see, I'm working at Moon Lovers coffee shop."

Something shifted in his expression, though I wasn't sure what.

"Why are you working at a coffee shop? You have the skills to work in the medical field."

I smiled and looked down. How could I tell him I'd tried? I'd tried so hard, but no doctor would hire me because their head Alpha had blacklisted me.

"Natalia, what's so special about that place that made you want to work there?"

His question made me think of Liana, the shop's owner.

"The owner is incredible. She treats me like her own daughter."

He nodded slightly, but he didn't look happy about me working at a coffee shop.

Suddenly, something occurred to me. I'd been wanting to ask him this for two days.

"Max, you told me the other day that you'd been looking for me."

He slammed on the brakes, and I lurched forward as the car jerked to a stop.

I was stunned. He looked just as shocked. He turned to me and asked,

"Did I say that?"
