Alpha's Twins Chapter 29
A few days had passed, and I'd made some adjustments to my daily routine.
These days, I was getting up early to make it to the office on time. To get a better handle on everything, they'd given me a position in the finance department. I tried to understand what the employees were thinking too.
That way, I could figure out what they really thought about the business and whether they were actually loyal to the company.
People saw me as just another employee like them. They had no clue I'd be their CEO soon.
Over the past few days, I'd noticed Noah acting a little different. When I asked him about it, he just said, "I don't like that uncle."
I was surprised he brought up Adrian. There was something weird in Noah's eyes, but I couldn't figure out what it was. So I decided not to push him about Adrian.
Aria, on the other hand, had taken a liking to Adrian after that one meeting. She kept talking about him to me. I just told her he was a stranger and she'd never see him again.
It really broke my heart seeing how my kids reacted to him. They didn't know he was their father. And I didn't want to tell them the truth either—it scared me too much.
But my mother told me not to worry about it since Adrian was far away from them anyway.
It was noon.
I was sitting at my desk, going through some files.
Someone knocked on my door.
"Come in."
The door opened and a young woman poked her head inside.
"Miss Natalia, it's lunchtime."
She was an employee, Damia Robson. She was a bit younger than me, probably in her early twenties. But she was incredibly good at her job.
"I'm coming," I told her.
When I saw she was still standing by the door, I closed the file I was holding and got up from my chair.
I walked over to her and left my office with her.
"I figured you'd be buried in work. So Beta Eric told me to come get you."
That surprised me. I frowned at her. She laughed and whispered in my ear,
"I know who you are."
"Oh," I mumbled.
She must be a really trusted employee—that's why Eric had told her about me.
"Don't worry. I'm not going to tell anyone," she assured me.
But there wasn't much to worry about anyway. In a few days, everyone would know about me.
I smiled and nodded at Damia.
We had lunch in the company cafeteria. I watched the people around me.
The young women looked pretty well-off, which showed that our company was paying them really well. The guys seemed sharp, like they knew working hard would pay off for them.
After lunch, I headed back to my office. Damia walked with me.
As I was passing by the break room, something caught my eye and I stopped dead in my tracks.
There was a cello sitting in the middle of the room. I stared at it. I couldn't look away.
I heard Damia's voice next to me. "Miss, do you know how to play cello?"
I turned away from it and gave a small nod.
"Do you want to play it?"
I smiled bitterly. "Unfortunately, I injured my right hand a few years ago, and I can't play anymore."
Damia looked really surprised to hear that.
Memories flooded back of when I burned my right hand trying to save someone's life.
I closed my eyes as a rush of memories hit me, taking me back to that terrible moment when I risked everything to save another person.
Thinking about that time, I slowly lifted my hand and gently touched my arm. The pain I felt back then haunted me all over again.
But that was all in the past. Even though I loved the wrong person, I never regretted it.
"Miss, are you okay?" Damia asked, sounding worried.
I snapped out of my thoughts and replied,
"Yeah, I'm fine."
After glancing at my hand, she asked, "Is your hand okay?"
I could only say, "Mm-hmm."
When I got back to my office, I tried to keep myself busy again.
But my thoughts kept drifting back to those horrible incidents from the past, which I'd almost forgotten after marrying Adrian.
I grabbed a file and tried to focus on work.
Just then, my phone started ringing. I looked at the screen. I recognized the number.
It was my ex-husband, Adrian.
How did he get my number? I figured my stepfather must have given it to him.
I didn't answer his call. As soon as my phone stopped ringing, I picked it up and blocked Adrian's number.
A little while later, Eric came into my office looking annoyed.
I stood up and asked,
"What happened?"
He showed me his phone and said,
"Your ex-husband is calling me. Should I answer it?"
That caught me completely off guard. Adrian had never tried to contact Eric before. Not after the fight in the hotel room.
I had no idea why Adrian was calling Eric. So many questions raced through my mind.
Did he find out that Aria and Noah were his kids?
I bit my bottom lip anxiously. Eric didn't like Adrian—he'd told me that many times before.
He stared at me, waiting for an answer.
I took a deep breath and said,
"Answer the call."
