Adrian's POV

I stared at the diary for a while, my fingers tracing the brown leather cover. The binding was worn but sturdy, and the faded gold lettering still caught the light.

I sighed and pushed myself up from the bed. Diary in hand, I took one last look around the room before stepping out.

The moment I closed the door behind me, Amanda appeared in the hallway.

"Alpha, Doctor Harold is here to see you."

I frowned. "Who told him I was here?"

She dropped her gaze to the floor. I didn't need an explanation—she'd obviously called him about my injured hand.

"Tell him to meet me in the study."

"Yes, Alpha."

Amanda hurried off while I headed down the hall toward my study. When I opened the door, I noticed the room was spotless. The maids kept everything in perfect order, even when I wasn't around.

I settled into my chair behind the desk and set the diary to one side. A few minutes later, Harold knocked and entered.

"Could you come over to the couch, Alpha? I need to clean that wound properly."

I wasn't in the mood for medical attention, but I stood up anyway and walked over to the leather couch against the wall.

Harold sat beside me and carefully began removing the tiny glass fragments still embedded in my palm with a pair of tweezers.

The pain barely registered. I'd felt much worse—like when Natalia's claws tore across my chest during that battle. She'd been trying to kill me, even though I'd only joined the fight to protect her.

I watched Harold work, then noticed him reaching for a small red vial.

"What's that?" I asked.

The moment the red liquid hit my wound, it burned like hell. I hissed and jerked my hand back.

Harold grabbed my wrist to hold it steady while he applied some kind of ointment. "Alpha, it's a new antiseptic we got from Doctor Max."

I yanked my hand away and grabbed Harold by the shirt collar, pulling him close. He went pale.

"A-Alpha—"

"How dare you use his stuff on me? Who gave you permission? I don't want anything from that man. Got it?"

"Y-Yes, sir."

I realized I was being too rough on him and let go, though I kept glaring.

"Just finish up. Quickly."

"Y-Yes, Alpha."

His hands shook slightly as he wrapped the bandage around my palm. When he was done, he packed up his medical kit and stood to leave.

"May I go now, Alpha?"

I nodded. But as he reached the door, I called out, "You're friends with Natalia, right? I've seen her bring you flowers. Did you know she was going to end up with Max Harrison?"

Harold turned around, though I kept my eyes fixed on the desk.

"Alpha, Natalia's a strong woman—a true Alpha female. She could have any man she wanted."
