Alpha's Twins Chapter 198
Max's eyes locked onto Jason, studying him with an intensity that made it seem like he could see straight through to his soul, monitoring every heartbeat. He moved closer to the bed with deliberate steps.
I watched him, catching something different in his expression.
"Harold, what do you think? Can he actually help Jason recover?"
Harold stared at Max's back, clearly deep in thought.
It suddenly dawned on me that Harold was Jason's attending physician. Had I overstepped by bringing Max here without checking with him first?
But Harold was the one who'd told me about Max in the first place.
"I can't thank you enough, Harold. You've had my back my entire life. I honestly don't know how I'll ever repay you."
He turned to me with a gentle smile.
"Friends don't keep score."
My eyebrows shot up in surprise. He was incredibly generous-spirited. Honestly, the kindest person I'd ever met.
"Thank you so much, Harold."
He started to respond when his phone buzzed.
He fished it out of his pocket, and his face immediately tensed when he saw the caller ID.
He glanced at me before answering.
"Alpha."
I knew it had to be Adrian. Max turned around too when he heard Harold's formal tone.
"I'm sorry, what?" Harold said, his forehead creasing.
Harold looked genuinely confused, but then nodded as if Adrian were standing right there.
"Got it, Alpha. I'll update you the second I have anything."
I watched him end the call, curiosity getting the better of me about what that conversation was about.
"What's going on, Harold?"
"Alpha wants me to dig up some old records from the pack hospital."
Max walked over to us. "Everything okay at the pack hospital? All the patients doing alright?"
I could see genuine concern in Max's eyes. His voice was serious, but there was an underlying worry there too. As a healer, he really got other people's pain. His concern for members of another pack actually warmed my heart a little.
"Yeah, everything's fine," Harold assured Max, then looked back at me.
"He's asking if anyone named Lynda was ever admitted to the pack hospital years ago."
I frowned at that.
Lynda? What could have happened to her that required hospitalization?
Harold glanced at Jason briefly before filling Max in on his current condition.
"Natalia, I need to head out. I've got to double-check everything before I report back to Alpha. Can't afford any mistakes. He sounded pretty pissed."
I rolled my eyes. "Sounds like his precious girlfriend is made of glass. A few months back, her hand broke just from me gripping it. God knows how many bones she's shattered on her own over the years."
Harold shook his head. "This seems serious though. Want me to let you know if I find anything?"
I shook my head and replied calmly,
"No need to keep me posted about your Alpha. I'm completely done caring about anything involving him."
