His words pulled me straight back to my past. When I was married to Adrian, hardly anyone knew we were even together.

I always remembered our head housekeeper, Amanda, telling me how beautiful I looked whenever I dressed up for Adrian. She'd say I had gorgeous features, but that I seemed so delicate.

Back then, I didn't have my wolf yet. That's what made me appear weak. But it didn't take away from my looks.

Still, I couldn't forget all those times Adrian called me ugly. He'd tell me I couldn't compare to any attractive woman who might catch his eye. To him, I was the most hideous woman alive.

"Could I get another coffee?"

Max's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I watched him wave over a different waitress.

The girl walked up to our table and shot me a look, like she was wondering why I wasn't taking Max's order myself.

"Of course, sir," she answered.

"It's for this beautiful lady here. I'm not sure what she likes, so maybe you could make something you think she'd enjoy."

The waitress looked completely shocked. She kept glancing between Max and me while I just stared at him.

After she took his order, she nodded and walked away.

Max got up and moved to the chair across from where he'd been sitting. He pulled it out and gestured for me to come over.

"Please, have a seat."

I blinked, then looked around to see every employee in the café and a few regular customers watching us.

I quickly sat down, hoping to stop drawing their attention.

Adrian had already caused enough of a scene today. I definitely didn't need more drama.

"Max."

"Natalia, you look completely drained. What's wrong?" he asked, settling back into his chair.

I took a deep breath, trying to pull myself together.

"Even if you were just trying to make me feel better, thank you."

He raised an eyebrow. "You think I was lying? Not a chance. You were stunning back in your old pack. Now you've got this soft, gentle beauty about you."

I was surprised by how easily he talked about different kinds of beauty. Did all healers have such a smooth way with words?

"You're quite the charmer."

"I know."

He laughed, and I found myself smiling when I saw his grin. There was something so peaceful about his expression that put me at ease. I realized that whenever he was around, I felt calm. Like he could handle whatever problems life threw at me.

"So, what did you want to talk ab—"

My phone started ringing, cutting me off. I glanced down at the screen.

Max leaned over to see who was calling, and his expression darkened. Clearly, he wasn't happy about whoever it was.

"Sorry about this," I told Max before answering.

"Harold."

"Natalia, what the hell is going on? Did you really go to the Alpha's office today?"

I was confused. How could he possibly know that?

"How did you find out? Don't tell me my little visit to the company made the news," I said, trying to laugh it off.

But my laughter died when I heard his response.

"That's exactly what happened. Check the trending topics. You and Alpha Adrian are all over social media right now."
