Alpha's Twins Chapter 78
His question made me scowl. When he saw I wasn't responding, he started to ask again.
"Why did yo—"
"Because you don't deserve to know." I cut him off, my voice ice-cold.
He went quiet for a moment after that.
"What happened, Alpha Adrian? Your mouth's usually running a mile a minute. Why so quiet today? Cat got your tongue?"
I threw his own mocking words right back at him, the same ones he'd used on me countless times.
Looking into his eyes, I couldn't find the hatred he'd always shown me before. Instead of hostility, there was something almost... still about them.
"Shocked that I'm actually an Alpha's daughter?" I asked, sarcasm dripping from every word.
He nodded slowly. "Very."
I yanked my hand away and took a step back.
"Now that you know who I am, I hope you'll leave me alone."
I moved to head back to the party, but Adrian grabbed my hand again. This time, instead of pulling me closer, he spun around and pressed me against the wall he'd been leaning on.
"What the hell are you doing, Adrian?"
"If you knew my accusations were wrong, why did you lie to me? Maybe I wouldn't have said those things if you'd just told me the truth that day."
I tried to push him away, not wanting to have this conversation. But his eyes stayed locked on mine, and he didn't budge an inch—like he was made of stone.
"You're a complete scumbag. Let me go."
"Call me whatever you want. I'm giving you that right. But you're not leaving until we finish this conversation."
I stopped struggling and looked up at him.
"Tell me," he said, his expression dead serious, "how much else are you hiding from me?"
"Even if I am hiding something, it's because you have no right to know about it," I shot back.
His eyes started scanning my face. I looked away because I could feel my wolf wanting him closer, and I couldn't deal with that right now.
He leaned down to my eye level. I immediately tried to turn my head, but the movement made his nose brush against mine.
Memories of the past flooded back—times when I'd desperately wanted him this close. I squeezed my eyes shut, remembering all the pain he'd caused me.
"A guy like you never changes. You never missed a chance to tear me down," I muttered angrily.
He let out a breath, like something had hit him. His voice dropped lower.
"I'm sorry."
I froze. Slowly, I turned to face him, realizing just how close we were.
His breath ghosted across my face. That cologne I'd missed so much after leaving him filled my nose.
But none of it could fix my broken heart. I looked at him with complete indifference.
"Sorry for what?"
He looked away. "I shouldn't have accused you like that. But you should have told me the truth too."
I scoffed. "Didn't I tell you that you were wrong about me?"
Adrian remembered my words from that day. His eyes widened for a split second before he covered it up, squeezing them shut.
For the first time ever, I saw guilt on his face.
I figured he only felt guilty because he knew my family's status now. He didn't want to mess up relations with my family.
"You don't need to worry about my family. I'm professional. I won't take my anger out on your pack."
Adrian actually chuckled, which caught me off guard. He looked into my eyes.
"Do you really think Alpha Adrian needs to kiss up to anyone?"
I smirked back. "Didn't I already knock you down a peg by stealing those projects from you? You still want to act tough? Focus on your work, Alpha Adrian. Who knows when I might change my mind and target your pack instead of just your company?"
Over the past few months, I'd won every deal against his pack. I didn't want an actual war, but I wanted him to feel defeated by me.
Adrian's jaw clenched. I almost laughed out loud. This guy could never actually feel sorry for anything. I'd misread him again. That familiar arrogant look was already back.
"What was your brother saying? That I don't deserve you? What exactly did I do to you? Doesn't he know about his sister's dirty little secrets?"
My smirk vanished the moment he said that.
"His sister cheated on her marriage and got knocked up with another man's babies. Oh wait—wasn't that man his best friend?"
I gripped my dress, trying to control my rage. "Yeah, you're right. It was his best friend. I slept with his best friend when I was still—"
"NATALIA!"
His shout cut me off as his hand shot to my neck. His eyes flashed red—his wolf was taking over.
Seeing those red eyes, my wolf growled inside me. I refused to let her take control, so I pushed her down and stared right back into his crimson gaze.
He'd never bothered showing me his wolf before, so I'd never seen this side of him.
"Since I used to be wolfless, you thought I was worthless. I'll never forget those days, Adrian Miller."
His grip on my neck loosened, but he didn't let go. He closed his eyes, fighting to control his wolf.
When he opened them again, they were back to black.
"I heard your parents accepted Lynda as their future daughter-in-law. Why don't you just marry her and have your own kids? Stop bothering me."
I grabbed his hand that was still around my neck. I didn't need much strength to pull it away.
He stepped aside, letting me leave. I glanced back at him and found him lost in his own thoughts.
I left him there, alone under the moonlight.
