Adrian kept his head down, refusing to meet my eyes like he was hiding something. Wasn't he just glaring at me a minute ago?

Since he wouldn't look at me, I turned away and slid the menu across the table toward him.

"I'm here to take your order, Alpha. What can I get you?"

He sat there in complete silence, and I felt my hands clench into fists. This guy came here just to mess with me at work.

Out of all the fancy coffee shops in town, why the hell would he pick this one?

"Excuse me? Are you even listening?"

His silence was getting on my nerves. I started to turn away, ready to leave him sitting there.

But then he spoke up, his voice sharp with anger.

"Where were you today?"

I spun around to face him, and the look in his eyes caught me off guard.

He was clearly in a foul mood. But his question killed my mood too.

"And what is..." I stopped mid-sentence, glancing around to see if I was being too loud.

Once I was sure everyone else was minding their own business, I lowered my voice.

"And what's that supposed to mean?"

"I asked you a question. Don't dodge it."

I let out a bitter laugh. "Don't give me that attitude. Maybe you own this pack, but right now, this coffee shop is my territory."

"Oh really?"

The way he said it made me blink. I shrugged and looked away.

"I mean, not mine exactly. But not yours either. This is my boss's place, and she put me in charge. So until she gets back, I decide who stays and who goes."

"So you want to kick me out so I can shut this place down tomorrow?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

I was speechless. Did he just threaten me?

"You—"

"What's going on between you and that healer?" He cut me off, his voice ice-cold.

"What?"

I had no idea what he was talking about until he continued.

"You don't care what people say about you, do you? Go check out the garbage they're spreading about you online."

I frowned. "What garbage?"

He didn't answer, like it suddenly wasn't important anymore. He grabbed the menu and started flipping through it.

As his waitress, I had no choice but to stand there and wait. While I waited, I started tapping my foot on the floor.

"Bad habit," he muttered without looking up.

I stopped tapping and glared down at him, then muttered under my breath,

"Look who's talking. The guy who chain-smokes like a maniac is lecturing me about bad habits."

He looked up and raised an eyebrow.

"Excuse me? Did you just say something?"

I gave him a fake smile. "No, Alpha. Please order quickly. You're not my only customer."

"Espresso," he said, handing the menu back to me.

I yanked the menu from his hands and turned toward the counter.

When I got behind the counter, one of the girls asked,

"What did he order?"

I rolled my eyes at yet another member of the popular Alpha's fan club.

"Bitter espresso for a bitter man."
