Alpha's Twins Chapter 39
The room fell dead silent after my words dropped. You could practically hear a pin fall.
Then the other doctors erupted.
"Are you kidding me right now? You don't even know what we're dealing with, do you? That treatment isn't some recipe you can just whip up in your kitchen."
"Exactly. We spend all year trying to get five minutes with Dr. Max, even just to shake his hand. And you waltz in here claiming you can give us his miracle cure?"
I tuned them out completely, keeping my eyes locked on Dr. Harold the whole time.
He raised his hand, and the room went quiet instantly. That's the kind of respect the chief of medicine commanded around here. Everyone shut up and waited.
"You sure about this, Natalia?"
The other doctors' jaws practically hit the floor. They stared at Dr. Harold like he'd lost his mind.
They couldn't wrap their heads around why he'd trust some random person who'd just appeared out of nowhere.
"Absolutely," I said, not backing down an inch.
He glanced over at Aunt Grace behind me, then nodded. When I turned around, I could see she was barely holding it together.
"If Natalia can help us save him, then that's what we're going to do. If she can actually pull this off, it'll be nothing short of a miracle," Dr. Harold told Aunt Grace.
"Natalia, do you really have this cure? Will you really help Lucas?" Aunt Grace's voice was desperate, pleading.
I nodded, and she threw her arms around me.
"I don't know how I'll ever repay you. After everything that happened before... and you still came to help us."
I promised her I'd do whatever it took to help her husband.
Dr. Harold cleared his throat. "I need to get Alpha here ASAP. We need to talk."
Aunt Grace's face lit up as she turned to him. "Will Lucas be okay soon, Harold?"
Harold looked at me like I was their last hope. I nodded, and he turned back to Aunt Grace with the same gesture.
"He will be."
Aunt Grace let out a huge sigh of relief and went to sit beside Uncle Lucas.
While Dr. Harold watched me, the other doctors busied themselves adjusting medical equipment.
"I'm heading out. Someone told me an old friend was back in town and wanted to see me."
I knew he was talking about me. I smiled as he left the room.
I stayed with Aunt Grace for a while longer. She kept firing questions at me - how did I know about the cure, how could I read those medical reports?
I told her I'd explain everything eventually, but not right now. I just needed her to trust me.
She said she didn't have any choice but to trust me - her husband was dying.
When a guard brought lunch for Uncle Lucas and Aunt Grace, I stood up.
"Stay and eat with me. Lucas is sleeping anyway, so I'd just be eating alone," Aunt Grace offered.
"Thanks, but I need to meet someone. I'll be back in an hour."
Aunt Grace didn't try to stop me. I headed out to find Dr. Harold - it was lunchtime, so maybe he'd be free.
As soon as I stepped outside, one of the security guards handed me a bouquet of white roses.
I'd completely forgotten about those - I'd bought them for Dr. Harold. Good thing it was winter, so they hadn't wilted yet.
I thanked the guard and headed for the elevator.
I hit the button for the chief of medicine's floor and waited. When the doors opened, Dr. Harold was standing right there.
Looked like he was heading somewhere. His face broke into a smile as he stepped into the elevator.
"Hey there."
We were alone in the elevator. I smiled back.
"Hi. I was actually coming to see you."
He didn't look surprised at all. "Why didn't you come earlier? I was waiting for you."
"I didn't want to bother you during work hours."
He laughed at that. I shook my head.
"Actually, I didn't want to leave Aunt Grace when she was so upset."
I caught Harold glancing at the bouquet. I handed it over immediately.
"These are for you. I can't even begin to thank you for everything you did for me five years ago."
This time he looked genuinely surprised by my gratitude. He took the flowers and asked quietly,
"Did your children—"
"They made it," I cut him off, knowing exactly what he was asking.
He stared at me for a long moment. The elevator dinged and the doors slid open.
We stepped out together. I'd accomplished what I came for - thanking him. I was about to leave when he stopped me.
"Natalia, let's grab lunch together."
