When Max left the study, I found myself wrestling with his words.

*She can get any man she wants? Does she want Max? Does she actually like him? What does he have that would make her choose him?*

The questions wouldn't stop spinning through my head. I tried pushing them away, but they just kept circling back.

My gaze drifted to the desk where I'd left Natalia's diary.

Suddenly, I was hit with this overwhelming curiosity—I wanted to see her handwriting, to know what thoughts she'd poured onto those pages.

I walked over and settled into my desk chair, then reached for the diary and cracked it open.

My eyebrows shot up at what I saw on the first page.

She'd placed a photo from our wedding there, with a small note written underneath in her neat script:

*"My married life with the person I love the most."*

My hands clenched as I read the line over and over. We'd literally just gotten married that day—how could she already claim to love me most?

I flipped the page and kept reading.

Page after page was filled with details about me. She'd written about me like I was some kind of superhero because I'd saved her from that creep that night.

I read about how hard she'd tried to fit in with my family's way of life.

Her handwriting was gorgeous, and the way she expressed herself made her feelings crystal clear.

When I got to her thoughts right after our wedding, I couldn't help smiling.

She'd been so excited and nervous about spending the rest of her life with me.

But then my expression darkened when I hit something that made my stomach turn.

*"Today Mom and Dad set up a yacht for me and Adrian. Since he refused to go on a honeymoon with me, they planned a special night for us instead.*

*I'm so excited because Adrian actually agreed to his parents' plan.*

*I'm wearing this red backless dress. It's not that I'm trying to seduce him or anything, but I want to look beautiful for him. I want tonight to be something we'll both remember forever."*

It looked like she'd written that before heading out, because on the next page, her tone completely changed.

I noticed dried teardrops scattered across the paper.

*"Adrian wasn't answering his phone, so I went to the marina alone. I figured he'd meet me there.*

*But when I got there, only Dad's security guys were waiting. They helped me onto the yacht and said Adrian would be along soon.*

*The yacht was absolutely gorgeous—decorated with flowers and candles everywhere. Against the dark water, it glowed like something out of a fairy tale.*

*I waited for him for hours. I kept telling myself he'd show up, but he never did.*

*When I felt the yacht start moving, I panicked and ran to the captain. I asked him why we were leaving when my husband hadn't arrived yet. He just told me that Adrian wasn't coming.*

*I spent the entire night alone on that yacht, staring out at the empty water.*

*I don't understand why he hates me so much. Why can't he see how much I love him? I'm his wife—his brand new wife. What could possibly be more important than me? Or maybe he just doesn't care about me at all?"*

I looked up from the diary, my vision blurring as that night came flooding back. I'd completely blown her off and spent the evening getting wasted at some bar instead.

A bitter wave of regret crashed over me as I imagined how alone and abandoned she must have felt.
