Alpha's Twins Chapter 222
"What?"
I could barely keep from screaming, fighting to keep my voice under control.
I shook my head, completely stunned.
"People are insane. They'll believe whatever the hell they want."
Max studied my face like he was trying to read my mind or something. His eyes went from clear to stormy, and his whole calm vibe shifted into something darker, angrier.
"Max, you don't actually think that, do you?"
"No," he shot back immediately.
"Exactly. So why can't everyone else get that through their thick skulls?"
He didn't answer, just stared down at my coffee cup. I took a sip without really thinking about it.
The silence stretched between us, heavy and awkward. I wasn't about to be the one to break it.
When he finished his coffee, he finally spoke up.
"You're never gonna have peace until you get the hell out of here. Move somewhere far away from him."
I dropped my head and mumbled, "I know, but I can't just abandon my family. If we all left together, we'd have nowhere to go."
Max was quiet for a minute, thinking it over.
"It could work if your brother recovers."
"How?" I asked.
"He could reach out to my head Alpha for help. Send an official request. My Alpha's not a complete asshole. I think he'd work something out."
Even though Adrian was making my life a living nightmare, I wasn't ready to run off to some random pack. The Crystal Blood Pack felt like home. I'd spent twenty years of my life here.
"I think I should wait for my brother. He'll know what's best for all of us."
Max nodded. "By the way, I figured out the antidote for the poison."
My jaw dropped. "Are you serious..."
I couldn't believe Max had actually cracked it. This meant my brother was going to be okay.
"Yeah, I got it. Last night when I examined your brother, I finally identified which poison they used."
Hope flooded back into my chest—hope I'd almost given up on completely. I grabbed Max's hand without thinking.
"God, Max, I can't thank you enough. You really are a lifesaver. I knew you would be."
His eyes dropped to where my hand was gripping his. I looked down too, suddenly aware of what I was doing.
I started to pull away, but he covered my hand with his other one.
"Your brother's recovery should only take a couple months."
My eyes lit up. I bit my lip as tears started forming, blinking fast to keep them from spilling over.
"So you'll treat him?"
I wiped the corners of my eyes and smiled, nodding eagerly.
"I have one condition."
My smile disappeared instantly. "C-Condition?"
He pulled his hands away from mine.
"Be my girlfriend, Natalia."
