Alpha's Twins Chapter 37

"But we're not even married anymore. It's been five years. Why is he still hung up on that one thing?" I asked, genuinely confused.

"We don't know either. Even when you two were married, he was manageable. But once you left the pack, everything changed. He became this cold, heartless person," Uncle Lucas said, his voice heavy as he remembered those dark days when Adrian started acting so strangely.

I reached over and took Auntie Grace's hand, gently rubbing my thumb across her palm.

"Everything's going to be okay. Please don't cry."

She nodded and wiped her tears away. "I just can't stop worrying about my husband."

I looked over at Uncle Lucas, and my heart broke seeing how frail he looked.

I felt tears starting to well up in my eyes, so I bit my lip and quickly wiped them away.

I've always been too emotional. I can't stand watching other people suffer.

Alpha Lucas was someone I'd always looked up to. I remembered him in his prime—this powerful man whose presence alone could command a room. Now here he was, lying in a hospital bed with a broken heart and failing health. It was almost too much to bear.

Even though part of me wanted to go back to my pack, I couldn't bring myself to say anything right then. I decided I'd leave tonight after we had dinner together. Maybe spending the whole day with them would help lift their spirits somehow.

After a while, Auntie Grace settled herself on the edge of the bed, and I pulled up a chair.

"Where have you been all these years?" she asked.

I knew I had to be really careful with my answer.

I couldn't tell them who I really was. Not yet, anyway.

And I definitely couldn't let them know I'd gotten my wolf.

What would I say if they asked about my mate?

I didn't want to keep piling on the lies. How could I possibly tell them that their son—the same son I'd divorced years ago—turned out to be my mate?

"I was with the Blue Blood Pack," I said simply.

Uncle Lucas perked up and focused on our conversation. "How did you end up there?"

His question brought back memories of the day I left Crystal Blood Pack—something I'd been thinking about a lot lately.

"My broth—" I caught myself just in time and clamped my mouth shut.

"Your what?" Auntie Grace asked.

I cleared my throat before answering. "That day, luck was on my side. Alpha Jason found me crossing into their territory."

I could see the surprise on both their faces. They were dying to know more.

"I was pretty rough around the edges back then, so he asked me a bunch of questions. When I explained that I had nowhere else to go, he let me stay in his pack. He's a good man."

Thinking about my brother made me break into a huge smile. He was one of the most powerful Alphas out there. The way he saved me that day and accepted me as his sister—I'll never forget it.

Uncle Lucas must have read something else into my smile because he asked with a puzzled look, "Are you two close?"

I laughed at his question. "Of course we are. It's just that Alpha Jason is this really respected leader, and I admire him a lot. That's all."

Auntie Grace smiled at me. "I heard about your fiancé. I'm so happy you're trying to start fresh with someone you care about."

Her words caught me completely off guard.

Fiancé? What was she talking about?

Then it hit me. She was talking about Beta Eric. Had they seen Eric's post on social media too?

"Does he treat you well?" Uncle Lucas asked.

I thought about it. Of course Eric treated me well. For the past five years, he'd been there for me through everything, helping me get through all kinds of situations.

"Yes, he does," I mumbled.

I knew they were getting the wrong idea about Eric and me. But I couldn't lie about how good he'd been to me.

I felt a gentle hand stroking my hair. I turned to see Grace smiling at me.

"Don't worry about what other people think. You're an amazing woman. I know you'll find the happiness you're looking for."

I stared at her. In the beginning, when I first married Adrian, she couldn't stand me. But over time, she grew to like me. Even now, she still cared about me so much. That's why she wanted me to be happy, even though I was her son's ex-wife.

I realized I shouldn't lie to them about Eric and me. Right then, I decided to set the record straight about Eric just trying to help me out of a bad situation.

"Actually, Eric and I—"

I couldn't finish because the door opened and a group of doctors walked into the room.

Both Auntie Grace and I stood up.

The doctors turned to Uncle Lucas and gave small bows to both him and Auntie Grace.

Even though they'd retired from their positions, it was still appropriate to show them respect.

As I looked over the group of doctors, my eyes landed on the one standing in front.

He was staring right back at me, looking absolutely shocked, like he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

I smiled at him and said, "Doctor Harold."
