Alpha's Twins Chapter 197

Max's words hit me like a punch to the gut. What did he mean he was "aware of everything"? Who the hell had been talking about my past?

"How do you know?" I demanded.

He wouldn't meet my eyes, just stared out the windshield and mumbled, "I heard about what went down in the war. How you fought back, how Alpha Adrian was desperate to get his kids back... I got the whole story from some of your pack fighters who made it out alive."

I opened my mouth to respond, but nothing came out. My throat felt tight.

Screw this. I wasn't having this conversation right now.

I yanked open the car door and stepped out. "Let's go inside. I'll show you to my brother's room," I said, bending down to look at him through the window.

He stared at me for a long moment, clearly pissed that I was cutting him off mid-conversation.

Finally, he sighed and got out of the car, following me toward the house.

The second I walked through the front door, all the staff turned to gawk. Their eyes quickly shifted to Max, and I could practically see the question marks floating over their heads. Did they recognize him?

Nah. From the dreamy looks on their faces, they were just admiring the eye candy. They had no clue who he actually was.

"This way," I said, gesturing toward Jason's room.

Max followed me down the hall and into Jason's bedroom. The moment I stepped inside, I froze.

Harold was sitting on the edge of the bed, setting up some medical equipment.

"Harold."

He stood up and turned around, his face lighting up when he saw me. "Natalia."

But that smile vanished the second Max walked in behind me.

"Doctor Max Harrison!"

Harold looked like he'd just seen a ghost. Or maybe a rock star.

Which, honestly, made sense. Every doctor in the country probably dreamed of meeting Max. The guy was a legend.

There was a huge difference between being a regular doctor and being a healer. Doctors could patch up cuts and broken bones, but healers? They could fix anything—even wounds you couldn't see. They had special abilities and marks on their bodies that proved what they were.

"This is Harold Reid, my friend," I said, introducing them.

Harold practically lunged forward to shake Max's hand. "It's an honor, Doctor Harrison."

"Good to meet you, Doctor Harold," Max replied.

Wait. That sounded familiar. Had they met before?

Max caught my confused look. "We met years ago at an experimental training program."

"Oh." That explained the recognition.

Harold turned back to me, still looking star-struck. "How do you know Doctor Max?"

"He's my friend."

Harold's eyebrows shot up. "Your friend? You never mentioned that before."

I laughed awkwardly. What was I supposed to say? That Max and I had only hung out a few times and I wasn't even sure he considered me a friend until today?

I decided to dodge the question entirely. "Harold, you said Max was the only one who could save my brother. Well, here he is. Now nothing's going to stop Jason from getting better."
