"Adrian, are you listening to me?"

Patric kept talking, but my mind was somewhere else entirely.

We were driving to the pack house. I'd called Patric on the way because I needed to talk to him about something important.

"Adrian." Patric said my name again, more firmly this time.

I pulled a cigarette from the pack and muttered, "I'm all ears."

As I brought the cigarette to my lips, Patric reached over with his lighter. "No, you're not."

The flame from his silver lighter caught, and I felt something ignite in my chest too—something deeper, more consuming.

I'd been fine before I learned the truth. Now I couldn't seem to accept anything.

Everything had changed overnight.

My thoughts kept drifting back to the way Natalia had responded to that other guy. Why didn't she try to keep her distance from Max the way she did with me?

And that healer! He had the nerve to flirt with her right in front of me. Did he have any idea who she was?

She might be my ex-wife, but there was still something between us—our mate bond.

The woman who belonged to me couldn't be with another man.

"If you're just going to ignore me, I don't know why you bothered calling me out here."

I turned to look at Patric. "What were we talking about?"

He sighed and shook his head, looking defeated. "I can't deal with you sometimes, Alpha."

"So you're planning to quit?"

His eyes went wide. Then he saw my smirk and relaxed a little.

Was I really that intimidating? Even my best friend couldn't tell when I was joking. Did he actually think I'd fire him from his beta position?

"Let's talk about what's really on your mind, Adrian. Did you talk to Natalia? What did she say?" Patric asked, his voice curious.

I stared out the window, remembering her exact words.

"She said she doesn't love me anymore."

"Hold up—where did love come from? You know she's moved on. It doesn't matter now. Did you at least apologize to her?"

"I did."

I took a long drag and exhaled slowly. Her name echoed in my head like a mantra.

*Natalia.*

"Bro, can you just tell me what you actually want? You know you love her, but you keep pretending you don't. Now that everything's out in the open, what are you going to do? Your actions affect the entire pack. You've got multiple packs under your control. You need to focus on leading them once you get your personal life sorted out."

I closed my eyes and leaned back in my seat. He was right. I wasn't just any guy—I was a head Alpha. I had to think about my packs before myself.

But I couldn't just give up on what I wanted. I had to do something about it.

"Patric, make an announcement tomorrow morning."

"What kind of announcement?" I could hear the confusion in his voice, like he was trying to read my mind.

I opened my eyes and looked up at the dark sky. It matched my mood perfectly. I took another deep drag and answered,

"Announce to the entire pack that Alpha Adrian has broken up with his girlfriend Lynda. They're no longer together."
