Alpha's Twins Chapter 65
After Adrian left, having torn me apart with his cruel words, I just sat there on the bed staring out the window. My chest felt hollow, like something had been ripped out of it. All I could think about were his accusations, the way he'd looked at me like I was nothing.
The only mistake I'd ever made was falling for him in the first place. If I hadn't been stupid enough to love him, I wouldn't be sitting here feeling like my world had collapsed.
I closed my eyes and reached out to my wolf. She was furious with Adrian - absolutely livid that he could treat his own mate this way.
"Nancy, let's just go home," I whispered to her.
But she stayed silent, withdrawing deeper into my mind. I could feel her disagreement radiating through our bond. She didn't want to leave. I understood - she was feeling the mate pull just as strongly as I was, maybe more.
That's the thing about being a werewolf. Your wolf is always there, this other part of yourself with her own feelings and opinions. You can't just ignore her, even when what she wants will destroy you.
But I couldn't give her what she needed. I couldn't stay here and let Adrian keep shredding me to pieces.
The door opened, interrupting my spiral of misery. I turned to see Harold walking in.
"Thank you," I said immediately. "For saving me again."
He smiled - that gentle, reassuring smile that somehow always made me feel a little safer. "Don't mention it. Just doing my job."
He handed me a plastic bag, and when I started to reach for it with my injured arm, he caught my hand.
"Easy there. Don't move that arm - it's still healing."
He settled my hand back in my lap and pulled my phone out of the bag. "Here. When they pulled your driver from the wreck, they found your purse. Had to check everything for security, you know how it is."
I stared down at my phone. "How's my driver? Is he okay?"
Harold's expression grew more serious. "He's in critical condition. Took a pretty bad hit to the head."
My stomach dropped. "Oh god. That's my fault, isn't it? I told him to drive faster. If I hadn't-"
"Hey." Harold's hand landed on my shoulder, firm and comforting. "Don't do that to yourself, Natalia. Accidents happen. And our medical team is the best around - he's going to pull through. It'll take time, but he'll be okay. I promise you that."
I let out a shaky breath. "I don't know how to thank you enough."
"You called me your friend, remember? Friends don't keep score."
I was about to tell him how grateful I was to have him in my life when another voice called from the doorway.
"Natalia?"
My heart leaped. "Jason!"
My brother rushed across the room, his face tight with worry. Harold stepped back to give us space and quietly closed the door behind him.
Jason's arms wrapped around me, and even though the movement sent a spike of pain through my head, I didn't care. This was exactly what I needed - someone who loved me unconditionally.
"Jesus, what happened to you?" he murmured against my hair.
I pressed my face against his shoulder, breathing in his familiar scent. For the first time since the accident, I felt truly safe. I wanted to break down and tell him everything - about Adrian's accusations, about how he'd looked at me like I was poison. But I couldn't drag Jason into this mess.
"I don't know," I whispered. "It all happened so fast. I was so scared."
The tears came then, hot and fast. Jason pulled back just enough to wipe them away with his thumbs.
"It's okay. You're going to be fine."
I nodded, then remembered something that made my stomach clench. "Jason, my scars..."
His eyebrows drew together. He glanced at my arm, which was hidden under the hospital gown's sleeves.
"What about them?"
"They... they became visible. Just suddenly appeared."
Something shifted in Jason's expression. His eyes flicked to Harold, who was standing quietly nearby, and I could tell he didn't want to discuss this in front of anyone else.
Harold seemed to pick up on the tension. He stepped forward with his hand extended.
"Alpha Jason, I'm Dr. Harold, head of our medical department. It's good to meet you."
Jason shook his hand, but his attention was still focused on me. Harold glanced between us and smiled.
"Natalia's told me all about her family. You're lucky to have such a caring brother."
Jason barely acknowledged the comment. "How is she, medically speaking?"
"She should be fully recovered within the week. I've given her some pretty strong healing enhancers to speed up the process."
Jason was quiet for a moment, then said, "I need her discharge papers prepared."
Harold looked genuinely shocked. "But she's not ready to be released. She needs at least a week of bed rest for the medication to work properly."
Jason turned to me. "Do you want to stay here?"
"No," I said immediately. The thought of staying in Adrian's territory any longer made my skin crawl.
"I have excellent doctors in my own pack," Jason told Harold. "She'll get the care she needs there."
I could see Harold struggling with this. It wasn't really his call - family had the right to make these decisions - but he clearly thought it was a bad idea.
"Harold," I said, trying to reassure him. "I'll be careful, I promise. Thank you for everything you've done. You're... you're really a good person."
He looked at me for a long moment, then sighed. "Just promise me you'll take it easy, okay?"
I nodded, giving him a genuine smile.
He started toward the door to handle the paperwork, but Jason's voice stopped him cold.
"Doctor Harold." Jason's tone had changed, becoming harder, more authoritative. "I appreciate everything you've done for my sister. But I hope you understand that your relationship with her should remain strictly professional. I trust you'll respect those boundaries."
The warning in his voice was unmistakable, and I felt my cheeks burn with embarrassment.
